Dachstein, Austria – Easter 2011

During Easter 2011, Mark and I along with Jamie and Kate, planned a ski tour around the Dachstein area of Austria. We met up with Lorraine and Andy Leivers of Austrian Alpine Activities as they were helping me plan a school ski trip to Radstadt the following year. When we arrived it was summer so we spent two days on the crags and via ferratas of the area. Andy then agreed to accompany us on a three day tour over and around the Dachstein, a route he had skied many times.

We skinned up to below the Dachstein North Face and then climbed a klettersteig(via ferrata) to the summit cross. We traversed the ridge before descending on skis to stay at the Adamec Hut. We all squashed into the winter room and spent a cosy night. The next morning, winter had returned. We had to return over the ridge via a klettersteig in strong winds and driving snow. We were all glad to see the cable car working so we could descend to the valley. We then had to abandon all plans for touring and make do with powder skiing
